Bear River Vineyards

133 Chute Rd Bear River Nova Scotia B0S 1B0 Canada
Bear River Vineyards is run by husband-and-wife team Darren Carey and Susan Wong. It is believed that vines were first planted in Bear River in 1611 by French settlers. Bear River Vineyards is home to some of Nova Scotia’s first vinifera varieties, which were planted in the late 1990s. The winery is housed in a masterfully-renovated bank-barn that was built in 1883. There is also a guest room located in the winery for those who wish to extend their stay and soak in the history and ambiance!

Awards & Recognition

Since the first vintages were produced in 2006, Bear River Vineyards has won over 30 medals for their wines.

Meet the Winemaker

Room located in the winery! Susan Wong is a pharmacist by trade but took winemaking at California based UC Davis. Patrick Cantieni consults in both the cellar and the vineyard. They utilize the unique four and a half story layout of the barn for a primarily gravity-fed winemaking process. The microclimate in Bear River allows for the production of vinifera such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Gamay and some traditional blends. Tours that highlight the winemaking process are offered daily during the season and generate great reviews!
